General Information

Since the INAOE (National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics) Library is a special library in scientific field, (Astrophysics, Optics, Electronics and Computer Sciences) so it should be considered a dynamic organism that must have a collection that is carefully chosen and up to date. Only through a collection with these qualities can the library respond adequately to the needs and interests of users.

The INAOE (National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics) Library, as a special library, has always been aimed towards high quality collections that are also cutting edge, currently, the library’s services are being digitized, which makes it’s collection a hybrid one. The INAOE Library’s collections complement each other and, in conjunction, they seek the same objectives that Institute does (as well as the lines of investigation that guide it). Therefore, these collections are not amorphous and undivided.

The collections or are divided into two main areas, the first one includes the newest materials and the second, older ones which are used less. Some magazines for example, are in the actual Library, this is the case of magazines dated from 1990 to current dates, the Warehouse-Library, however, holds those dating from 1989 or later.

The collection contains: Books, Periodical Publications, Theses (Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D) Technical Reports, Special collections and Audiovisual materials such as: tapes, CD’s and microfiche.

All of the materials are cataloged and classified under the Library of Congress Classification System. The library currently has 13,000 books in circulation and for consultation along with 500 magazine titles, 200 of which are now up to date. The collection also includes 150 VHS tapes,100 floppy and compact discs that go with books, as well as: conference anthologies, full text magazines, encyclopedias, dictionaries, over 1,200 theses and 200 technical reports, some of which are digitized.
